Hamilton
Some stories never get old, and this one by Alexander Hamilton is proof of that. Once an orphaned immigrant in the Caribbean islands, later one of the founding fathers of the United States – Hamilton became a true symbol of the American Dream.
In 2015, a musical dedicated to him debuted. The Disney+ movie, which was a live recording of it, did not do so until 6 years later. At that moment, this extraordinary show, a mix of hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, became one of the most popular musicals in the world.
Coco
Another offering from Disney+ is a Pixar film, spinning the tale of a little boy’s big dream – Miguel. Born into a family of shoemakers, the protagonist secretly dreams of becoming involved in music. For some reason, however, choosing such a path would condemn him to a fate of the damned in the eyes of his loved ones.
But there are more unknowns – Miguel already knows that there is a connection between him and the dead singer Ernesto de la Cruz. In order to put an end to the mysteries surrounding him, he decides to go to the Land of the Dead and find him. During this unusual journey, he is accompanied by an equally peculiar guide – the ghost of Hector.
The Lion King
Disney+ family films stay with us for a little longer. It’s all thanks to another cult title, which is undeniably The Lion King.
Simba was born as the son of Mufasa – the Lord of the Lion’s Land – and the future heir to the throne. Along the way , however, he fell victim to a plot concocted by his own uncle, Skaza. As a result, his further fate is followed away from the Kingdom, where, in the company of his new family – Timon the fur seal and Pumbaa the warthog – he leads a life free of worries, following the idea of “Hakuna matata”. However, it soon turns out that the past will not let him forget about itself.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Mildred (an Oscar-winning impersonation of Frances McDormand) has faced the worst nightmare a mother can experience. Her daughter has been murdered and there is still no hope of justice in sight.
The sluggishness of the police led by William Willoughby (Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson) forces them to take action on their own. An idea to mobilize the local police turns out to be… hiring three billboards with provocative messages. Soon the conflict escalates.
Avengers: Infinity War
Far from being united, Avengers have to overcome their differences. All thanks to the actions of Thanos (Josh Brolin) who, collecting the Infinity Stones, plans to put his dark visions into action.
So the fate of the universe now rests in the hands of Captain America (Chris Evans), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Will they be able to form a real team?
Free Solo
This Academy Award-winning Disney Plus documentary takes us on a portrait of the extreme figure of Alex Honnold, conqueror of the more than 2km-long vertical rock formation El Capitan. He may not have been the first to do so; however, no one else has managed to challenge the rock without a belay.
What history and personality are behind such a crazy decision? Is Alex’s body different from that of a mere mortal? What motivates him? These and other questions are answered by Free Solo.
Zootopia
Animal Kingdom is a city where animal dreams come true and the division between predators and prey is an archaic concept. At least that’s the idea that ambitious policewoman Judy Hops has come to it with. But as she soon finds out, it’s not easy being the first rabbit on the local police force.
Her partner in the investigation becomes Nick Byer – a smug, canny fox – which doesn’t bode well for the mission. In time, will our heroes manage to build a real crime team (and, by the way, not give them a reason to prosecute their own case)?
Grand Budapest Hotel
The cult Disney+ comedy takes viewers back to the glory years of the Grand Budapest Hotel, specifically to the interwar years of 1932.
His host is the eccentric Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes), who has a habit of sleeping with his “girlfriends”. One of them turns out to be eighty-year-old Madame D. (Tilda Swinton), and this acquaintance is about to cause a commotion the walls of the hotel have never seen before. At stake are a valuable painting and a huge family fortune .
Braveheart
By the time William Wallace (Mel Gibson) is anointed to lead a medieval uprising against the English occupying forces, he has seen firsthand what the ruthlessness of the enemy means.
As a child he witnessed the atrocities committed against his fellow Scots. And when, as an adult, he decided to return to his shadowy homeland, his most precious possession – his recently found love – was taken from him. Now he turns all his pain into revenge.
The Help
Rounding out the list of Disney+ movies to watch is the incredibly inspiring, timeless title, which is an adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s acclaimed novel.
Skeeter (Emma Stone) is a journalist at the beginning of her career. Soon, however, the whole hometown hears about her, which turns out to be a chance to shrug off the stagnant, unjust order.
All thanks to the heroines of her interview – black maids who work for the wealthiest local families, where hypocrisy and racial contempt are the daily bread.
