The entire system is based on the use of Apple Home Key, the Cupertino-based Giant’s relatively new system that allows a given lock to be opened by bringing a smartphone or watch close to the door. The user does not need to use an additional app to do this (unlock the phone and make additional movements) – they just need to bring the smartphone closer.
Due to the limited use of the Apple Home Key, the Level Lock+ locks are only sold in Apple stores in the US, and the price of a single set is $329. The hardware itself looks almost identical to previous versions of the Level Lock, but the new device gets support for iPhone and Apple Watch support.
If someone has set up their smart home using Apple HomeKit, then buying a Level Lock+ seems a natural addition to their smart home kit. It is worth mentioning that the user can grant access to the selected lock to another person – using an app on the phone or a special card for a set period of time, someone else will also be able to open the door thus locked.
This is a useful feature when you rent out your flat to someone or hire someone to look after your pets. The Level Lock+ uses a single CR2 battery to power it, and the Home Key itself is used in cars with CarPlay, among others, where a special function can be used to lock and unlock car doors. A similar feature is also being introduced in selected hotels – guests can open their rooms using their iPhones and Apple Watches.
